Visualizing Issues

Visualizing Issues
Student work presented by the Graphic Design Department at The University of the Arts

What does it mean to visualize and communicate complex social issues of our time? As Graphic Designers, we are called upon to research, organize, analyze, synthesize, and visually communicate complex concepts through various media.

This exhibition presents work from students in junior level Communications Studio. The students were asked to select and research social issues of particular concern to them. In a semester-long sequence of projects, students sought to express these issues through word and found or self-created images. This process culminated in a series of three posters in which students communicate positions on these issues.

An opening reception will be held Thursday, February 10 from
3 – 5 p.m.

February 7 – March 4, 2011

UArts Alumni Reunion | Alumni Show | Call for Entries

Sunday, September 6, 2009 06:17

UArts Symbol

Dear Fellow Graphic Design Alumni,

Have you ever had junior designers roll their eyes when you insist that they sketch with pencil and paper, rather than heading straight for the computer? Has a client looked at you like you were crazy when you propose taking a few weeks to come up with initial ideas for a project? Have you tried to explain overlays, or masks to someone who’s never done a mechanical? Drawn a beautiful curve with a brush that just doesn’t translate to Bezier?

Wouldn’t you like to see how the University of the Arts/PCA has always kept up with the evolving world of Graphic Design and still maintained its soul?

Help us show how!

In conjunction with Alumni Weekend (Oct 16-18, 2009), we are putting together a show of GD student work over the years. We would like to show the evolution of the UArts Graphic Design program through past student work – how it’s changed over time, maintained its emphasis on fundamental design principles, kept its process-oriented approach, and prepared students over the years for the design profession (and life) when they graduate.

The show will be about history, joy, frustration, and our collective experiences in this crazy, inventive program.

We’d like your help in creating this show. If by chance, you still have in your possession any original student work – plaka boards, painted posters, descriptive drawings, object translations, sketches, dots & lines projects, icon explorations, graphic identity proposals – we’d love to include them in the show. Even mechanicals! (Current students have no idea what that means!) And don’t worry about UPB (unsightly plaka build-up). It’s a badge.

Please send or deliver work ready-to-hang (need not be framed, but could be—pushpins and student work are natural friends) to:

Attn.: Jennifer Gin
Graphic Design Department
The University of the Arts
320 S. Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA 19102

Include your name, graduation year, course for which the work was done, instructor, and date of completion. Any short comments might also find their ways onto the wall.

Our deadline for receipt of the work is October 1. Thank you and see you and/or your work in Philly!
